One Excerpt describes the brutal tactics used by the bombers. A vivid account of the tragic catalyzing event can be readĪn artical by Paco Jarieg called “80 years is nothing.” can be found at this capture a vivid account of the bombing of Guernica. This Bombing was especially brutal due to the fact that many of the men were fighting at the time leaving the city full of women and children (Jarieg). The Bombing at Guernica was a pivotal point in the Basque History where under Francos militaristic rule he had the Nazis bomb the Basque City of Guernica.

The famous painting of Guernica by Picasso, serves as a strong artifact of this oppression. Much like the bloody past of Catalan, the History of the Basque people is one of bloody conquest that building in the 18th Century and Climaxing with Franco. This oral transmittance in which their laws were kept made their unique language particularly important to maintaining their independence. The Basques also had their own laws, which continually maintained through oral tradition. In this way they are similar to catalonia but the Basque language is an even older and more unique langue in the area which had been around since the introduction of pre-indo-European languages. The Basque Region is most known for its language. both were had for much of their history relative autonomy with their own government and laws, and both were oppressed by Spain and have struggled to maintain their identities ever since. Both share a common history as regions defined in part by with their own distinct language and cultures. The Basque Country, a region linking both Spain and France, shares many similarities with that of the Catalonia’s. As we dive into Catalonia’s history and modern day issues there is much that can be gleaned from their neighbors the Basques. During our research of the social and political climate of Catalonian we are cross analyzing it with other separatists movements and independent countries and states that have struggled to maintain their cultural and political independence.
